PAINTING OUT LOUD #4

PAINT OUT LOUD  is an "artumentary" of my paintings, from the
original sketch, to the finished oil painting, signed and framed.

This is #4 in my series of sharing secrets and insights into my creative process.
An artist learns to paint by painting. Each painting becomes our teacher and
paves the path for the ones to follow. Sometimes I know where I am going in a
painting, but often the painting changes direction without warning.  I have learned to go with it.

Now that we have entered into a new decade I am making plans for a new exciting series -
paintings I have never done before...larger images and lots of textures and FUN!

This is a blog about my new oil painting "Little Mozart".

I met this little boy (Dominic) and his parents last summer at the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach, CA. They have purchased
several of my paintings over the years.  They love my work and they really enjoy impressionistic art.  We've talked over the phone many times, but because they live in Canada and I'm in California, we hadn't been able to meet in person.  Finally, this summer they came to visit me at the Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach. This family was such a delight.  Their little boy loves the beach and I was prepared with a pail and shovel kit I bought for him. He is one of the sweetest, most inquisitive, darling little boys I've ever met. His happy demeanor and sparkling eyes made me just want to hug him (which of course I did). His parents were equally as sweet and genuinely kind beyond measure. His mom has sent me pictures of all three children every now and then over the years. For my birthday I received a handmade birthday card from Dominic - with an ocean theme! I love receiving cards made by hand. She recently sent me a photograph of Dominic at the piano. From the minute I saw this photograph, I just knew I had to paint it. It was such an endearing scene, with this sweet little boy! And, adding to the fun, the painting over the piano is mine - "Two Horns" - one of my favorites. I fell in love with this family.
It's amazing to think you can fall in love in your booth at an art show.

I was so taken with this wonderful little scene. I initially thought this painting was going to be a slam dunk.  Little did I know how many hours at the easel it would take me to create this darling little scene in their music room with Dominic practicing on the piano.  I changed his hair four times! Hours and hours and layers and layers I finally got what I wanted to convey. I made many changes as I progressed. My goal was to do a painting I would not only be proud of, but one that caught the sentiment of the moment and honored this lovely music room!
Where would we be without music and art?!

I initially sketched in the painting using a pastel pencil.  My substrate is a stretched linen. The pastel
pencil glides and blends easily on the linen canvas. I used some odorless mineral spirits to help create washes of color.

I added more values and hues, using liquin as my medium.  I wanted to establish my darks and lights.
I kept the palette warm and  glazed in some darks for the piano.

I began putting some detail in his face.  I worked on the books and picture frames
and gave more attention to the window and curtain.  I added more color and
design to the painting in the background. I re-worked my little painting over the piano.

I worked on the curtain and more details on his face.

I decided to change the size of the painting in the background.  I felt the image
was distracting from the figure. I made subtle changes overall to the books
and the frames and his hair. I painted many impressionistic strokes over the piano keys.

I again decided to change the size of the background painting.  At one point I took it
out altogether.  This time I think I've got the right size and toned down the value.
I softened the curtain and window to keep it from competing with the main focus of
the painting.  At this point I am finally happy with his face and hair.

I worked on the curtain and window and brought down that color into the background.
I put more details into the books and frames.  I adjusted his shirt and piano keys.
I gave more definition to the music book and deepened the piano with several
layers of a blue/black glaze.

The Last Painting of 2011 by September McGee, American Impressionist

"The Blues Singer II"
14" x 11" oil on museum panel

I wanted to finish off 2011 with a painting that spoke of the flavor of another wonderful year now ending.  Interestingly it ended up being one of my paintings of musicians.   But then again, what better ending!

She took three nights at the easel, when she dries I will most likely
tweek a few things here and there...in the interim....

May your song be sung with passion, joy, love and magic

and....

May 2012 be the year of miracles for you!

Blessings,

Happy Thankful Thursday from September McGee

"Nude Series - The Kimono"

My birthday is tomorrow. That makes today my last day of another birthday year! It is generally a reflective time for me and after just closing a two month summer show I worked daily - double reflective! Whew!!! Being 'out there' diurnal for months, now is a time of recoiling. A time to take it all in, and stir it up. Time to create a mixture never before created.
Yes, this is my juncture to up my game; to fearlessly dive into the unknown. Whatever happens the ride will be full of wonder. I can only pray I remain calm and focused with
unequaled humor as I forge forward.

I was planning on blogging to express some views as an artist - more or less
streams of words - that somehow express insights endlessly plaguing the creative mind.
I will save this for a later blog as I must now return to my easel to finish
my last painting of this year!

"Nude Series - The Kimono" is an oil on museum board that I painted about three years ago. I had shown her once, but, she has sat in my studio awaiting. I picked her up at the conclusion of the summer show and decided she was a good painting...but I wanted to make her GREAT!
It took a few more sessions that I planned (there is a tendency when changing one little thing to watch it grow, without notice, substantially). I probably had four sessions at the easel with her. Finally, last night I popped a few more highlights at the edges of her hair and added a little more of a yellow hue to the sil.... Finito!

I am so much happier with the piece.
Often our creations sit around waiting for us to be at the space and time to be finished.

I am starting a new space and time.

Check back in first of the week!

Blessings,

September McGee

Newest Creation from American Impressionist September McGee

Beach Series - The Yellow Sailboat III,  28" x 28" oil on canvas

The Yellow Sailboat III is my latest painting from my Beach Series!
I created this piece for a lovely woman named Karla,
who commissioned me to paint this little boy at the beach for
her new beach home in Belevedere because it reminds
her of her son when he was a little boy.

I had so much fun painting this little boy with his
yellow sailboat.  Yellow is the color of fun, so it is
no wonder that this was truly an enjoyable creation!
The blues and yellows and subtle grays lend a warm
and inviting feeling to this special moment in time.

I accept a limited number of commissions throughout
the year.  If you would like to capture a special
memory to be created just for you please
email me at:

Have a blessed Tuesday!

"Lorrie"

This is a commissioned painting of a beautiful woman named Lorrie,
who is a prominent dermatologist in Orange County, CA.

This has become one of my favorite paintings!
I am thrilled with the final rendering and believe I
captured the true essence of this wonderful woman.

Wishing you all joy, wonder, laughter

Monday Musings with American Impressionist September McGee

"Beach Series - First Steps"
12" x 9" oil on Italian panel

My new Beach Series paintings are just coming off the easel and I am delighted with the results.  The palette of color is both warm and cool resulting in a loving and peaceful rendering reminiscent of a day at the beach.  First Steps is a painting of a wonderful and lovely woman who is a mother of three!  I was honored to have her pose for me and we used a new beach for our setting here in Southern California.  The piece depicts her youngest baby trying out the feel of the ocean for the very first time and yes taking First Steps!

Any day at the beach is wonderful and this particular day was no exception.  Each of us has fond memories of our days at the shore and it is always my honor to be able to capture these moments in my paintings as they will live on for centuries!!!

My deepest gratitude for the fabulous models!

Monday Beginnings and Blessings from American Impressionist September McGee

Giorno di bucata - Wash Day

This is an oil on panel from my
travels to Italy.
I stayed in the house directly to the left
of this wonderful woman carrying her laundry.
The Italian people are so loving, warm,
friendly and kind.
I am lucky to carry my laundry
to the laundry room!

This is one of the reasons I love to
paint, because each rendering evokes fond
memories of the people and places
I have been.  And, paintings
last a lifetime and are then passed on
to bless someone else's life!
The joy of painting and leaving
behind uplifting visuals
for all to see is truly a blessing!

On this beautiful day I offer all of
you blessings beyond belief
and more!

Monday Musings in April with American Impressionist September McGee

"Couch Series - Kailee and Muffin"

This piece is an emotional painting I
just completed of my daughter
Kailee McGee and our beloved cat, Muffin.
The rendering is a pastel on board
and the technique I used takes a
great deal of time to create, but I have
to admit I am happy with the results!
It has lively colors and petites touches
that give the painting an impressionist
flavor while still maintaining form
and a sense of realism.

With my solo exhibition now complete
and a huge success I am on to
many new and exciting projects.
Stay tuned for updates!

Monday Blessings!

Monday Musings and Reviews for Solo Exhibition for September McGee

Red Hat Series - Tulips and Chardonnay

This is an original oil custom framed
in gold on display now at
September McGee's
Solo Exhibition
at the
Cottage Gallery
1524 Coast Hwy.
Laguna Beach, CA

Exhibition closes
March 31st!

The Gala Reception
was standing room
only and the
following review
says it all!

September McGee’s Solo Exhibition at the Cottage Gallery in Laguna Beach was a tremendous success. Sometimes a showing of a single artist’s work throughout one gallery can seem repetitious. Not this one. September’s wide variety of subjects, coupled with various techniques and medium, created an exhibit with great appeal and the feeling there were many artists competing for the collector’s attention. September has won over sixteen National Awards for her paintings and several were on display for this showing. The artist was available at her fabulous Gala Reception last Saturday to discuss her work and had the assemblage in awe.”
